Exiting Egypt Chapter 3B P1

Exiting Egypt Chapter 3B P1

“Moses: A Reluctant Prophet”

Exodus 3:11-4:17

By Dennis Lee

One of the greatest calls given by God to a human being was given to Moses. But instead of embracing the call, seeing that it was none other than the Lord God Himself that he was talking to, Moses thought up every excuse he could so as not to follow.

Literally, Moses fought against God and against His calling. And frankly I’m surprised that Moses didn’t end up fried. But that is the longsuffering, ever patient, and always merciful God that we serve.

But why was Moses so set on trying to counter what God wanted Him to do? Well, it’s because Moses wanted to do what Moses wanted to do the way Moses wanted to do it. Moses was set on living life His way and not God’s way. Moses was set on doing his own thing, and not God’s thing. And so, Moses made up his mind to reject God’s calling upon his life.

And while we may chastise Moses for doing this, seeing the miracle, and that it was none other than the Lord God himself in the bush, and hearing audibly God’s voice, how many of us have done the exact same thing, rejecting God’s call upon our lives. For you see all of us have a calling from God upon our lives. Yet, we hesitate, give excuses or just outright reject it, saying stuff like, “I’m too busy,” or “It’s just not practical given my present set of circumstances.” You see, we have used one excuse after another for not doing what God has called for us to do.

Years ago when God was calling for us to open up Calvary Chapel in Las Vegas, several of us went up to the mountains of Utah, around the Mammoth Creek area. As we were talking, something came up and I went off to be alone with God where He started to tell me what He wanted me to do.

Not only did God want me to take a step of faith, but knew my nature and wanted to teach me a lesson in the process. As I sat on a rock He told me what He wanted of me, and I remember saying, “But God,” and then I would give him an excuse why I couldn’t do it.

Then God told me again, and I said again, “But God,” and then I gave Him another excuse. Well this went on for about two or three more excuses when God finally had enough and forcefully told me, “Will you quit ‘butting’ Me.” And the reason I used the term forceful is because the next moment I was laying on my back, several feet away from the rock I was sitting on.

What we need to do is stop giving God all of our excuses, because in the end, God will have His way, only we’ll miss out on the blessings, which we will see is exactly what happened with Moses.
